  1. I don't know if California has a specific law addressing this, however; in my experience, it not required to show ID. That said, it is PREFERABLE to show id or have the cashier/salesperson ASK for ID to help combat fraud.  Especially with a debt card, since you general do not have the same fraud protection you would have with a credit card.

  2. I found a huge online list of California credit card resources. http://www.howtofindcreditcard.com/Calif... Try calling a nearby company and they hopefully answer your questions.

  3. I agree with showing ID.  However, It is against MasterCard and Visa policy to require ID to complete a purchase.   I still show my ID and I do not report them to Visa or Mastercard.

California and a couple of other states have laws that allows merchants to check ID.  California law could be interpreted in different ways.  Some merchants thinks this requires them to check id.

  4. Yes and no. Some places are more likely to ask for ID than others.  Also, the amount you are spending could trigger a request for ID.

  5. You don't need to show it if they don't ask! If there is a security freeze or warning on your credit profile the store will ask to see your ID.

But Its on a case by case basis. I generally pull both my debit card and id out, but only show id when asked :)

  6. Yes. To show that he is the rightful card owner they use a picture ID
