Most Italians, and Europeans in general, that cater to tourists speak English.  The further you get off the beaten track the more problems you would run into communicating, but nothing that would stop you from visiting.  Bring a guide book with some common phrases, make an attempt to speak Italian, have a good laugh when you butcher it, and enjoy your travels!

  3. No, don't worry. Most Italians speak English (even if it's with a funny Mafioso accent...but you can't blame us, at least we try!).

    And with George Clooney there, tourism has increased enormously , especially with American tourists visiting the lake, so I'm sure they'll make you feel welcome even if you don't speak English.

  4. You can survive also if you talk in english, most young people will understand you at least for the basic stuff like, where to eat and directions :)
