If I bought a trip from Fredericksburg, VA to Topeka, KS... amtrack list that they have to stop at Chicago. Does this mean I'd have to switch trains in Chicago or would it just stop there to pick up people?

  1. Yes, indeed, and you're also going to have to change trains at Washington.  Depending on when you leave, you'll most likely take train 94 (regional service) to Washington, where you'll have a 2 1/2 hour layover.  You'll then take train 29, the Capitol Limited, to Chicago, where you'll have a 6 1/2 hour layover.  Then board train 3, the Southwest Chief, for your ride to Topeka.

Keep in mind that Amtrak often runs late, so that 6 hour layover in Chicago likely will not be that long.  If the Capitol Limited is really late in getting in, ask Amtrak personnel on the train for help changing trains.  If they're aware you need to make a connection, they can often arrange to delay the departure of the Chief if necessary, but only if it'll be close.

If the Cap Limited is on time, you can take advantage of the time by exploring downtown Chicago a bit.  It's a short walk to the Sears Tower, for example, or maybe check out the Museum of Broadcast Communications.  Ask for directions at the information kiosk at Chicago Union Station.

You're likely not going to get into Washington very late, and if you're from Fredericksurg, you've likely already seen the area landmarks, so enjoy a leisurely wait at the station.  Plenty of time to get your bearings and make the train change easily.
