  1. Each cruise has it's own schedule and dress code.  Typically, a 3-5 day cruise will have 1 formal night (tux/suit and cocktail dress), 2 semi formal nights (dress shirt and slacks and regular dress/skirt) and 1 or 2 casual nights.  The only real rule of thumb in the formal dining room on casual nights is don't wear jeans, shorts or bathing suits.  Anything else is fine.  It's true that you will see some people in jeans in the formal dining room but they are definitely in the minority.  If you want to fit into the dress code it's best to avoid the formal dining room if you want to wear jeans and eat at a buffet that night instead.

  2. when i went on one of those cruises last year, they made it seem like you HAD to wear formal clothes. well...you dont. some people reallyyyyy dressed up and others wore jeans. you can pretty much wear what you want. :-)

  3. Typically for a one week cruise Carnival has two formal nights.  However, clothing that you would wear to church on Sunday is fine.  The following is from Carnival's website ...

Is there a dress code for the dining room?

Depending on the length of the cruise, either formal dress or casual resort wear is required in the Dining Room. The dress requirement for children is the same. For those not wanting to dress up, the Lido restaurants are open nightly (with the exception of the last evening of the cruise), and have a casual dress code. Formal Wear: tuxedo (optional); suit and tie; sport coat, tie and slacks; evening gown; cocktail dress; pantsuit Casual Resort Wear: sport shirts and slacks; dresses; skirts; pantsuit NOTE: Shorts, t-shirts and bathing attire are not permitted in the Dining Room during dinner.

  4. There are "formal" nights and regular nights.  On a 7-night cruise there will be two formal nights, on a shorter cruise there will be just one.

Here's what to wear, if you want to go to the main dining room...

FORMAL: My husband wore a dress shirt and pressed trousers, and this was fine.  Technically they say to wear a suit but you don't have to. That said, a lot of guests do look really nice in their tuxedos and evening gowns.

REGULAR: Jeans are fine.  No shorts, tee shirts / tank tops.  Regular shoes are better than sneakers, and definitely no flip-flops.

That said, if you'd rather stay in a tee shirt and shorts, you can always go to the casual restaurant.  That's upstairs and you can wear whatever you like.  The food is good there, too, but it's a buffet rather than table service.

  5. No on a 7 day cruise you will have 2 formal nights. the other night you still want to dress nice, but not formal.

  6. In the formal dinning rooms they have requested that you do not wear shorts, beach sandals and halter type top.  Do not wear jeans and run down tennis shoes.  Wear stuff that is nice.  On formal nights they request you wear formal stuff.  In the buffet line you do not have to be formal but you do not wear your swim suits , you have to cover up.

My husband and I find it a blast to wear our formal stuff.  we take a cruise about once a year so getting dressed up like that once a year is OK.  I even got my hair done at the spa.  Then we got our picture taken.

  7. If you want, you're more than welcome to dress formally every night. The only time you're required to dress formally is in the dining room on formal nights. Other than that, smart casual (or business casual as it's also called) is the dress code in most cases for the dining room. The buffets are informal for all meals.
