Do you have to wear glasses before you can wear contacts?

There is no real set time period you have to wear glasses for first before getting contacts.

But, most eyecare providers will insist you get glasses first just to make sure you have them.

If you get contacts first, you may never bother getting glasses after, and end up overwearing your contacts until you cause yourself problems.

No.  But, you should always keep a pair of glasses.  When I first got contacts after wearing glasses for years, I did not wear the contacts all day b/c it takes time to get used to them.  The time in between, I had to wear glasses.  If you want contacts, get glasses too.  They are a good backup and are almost mandatory if you are new to contacts and have very bad vision.  Obviously, ask your doctor just to get a professional opinion.  Hope i helped.
