  12. From the 1950s to the 1980s it was company policy for Woolworths to open branches on high streets facing Marks and Spencers. Whilst they were not in direct competition, it was an interesting strategy.

    The Sky V Virgin rivalry for the UK viewers is particularly acrimonious, with Sky throwing its toys out of the pram and refusing to allow Virgin to use Sky Sports, for example.

    A competition of formats in the video market between VHS and Betamax in the 1980s was won by VHS. A similar battle with CD formats was avoided by late co-operation between major producers.

    My favourite company rivalry is between Celtic and Rangers. The players and fans hate each other, yet for a number of years they were both sponsored by CR Smith, which was on their shirts.
