Question:

Do you know a friendly chihuahua?

I have a really sweet 2 year old chihuahua who has never snapped or even growled at a human. He loves everybody and everyone seems surprised by his nature. Even men who usually on principle dislike toy dogs grudgingly admit he's "alright" My husband , on seeing him, said why on earth did you buy that rat. By the end of the week I caught him putting him under his fleece "because he was cold". I have 2 huskies and on impulse..I know you shouldn't buy a dog on impulse..I bought this little chi. I have never met a chihuahua and have always liked big dogs but he is a sweetheart. But when I tell people I have huskies they are all enthusiastic but when I say I also have a chi they all have a story about some snappy dictator their granny / neighbour had. Does anyone out there know a friendly chi. I feel mine is running a one dog charm offensive for his breed.

  1. My 8month Chi is a SWEETHEART. He is friendly, and does not bark at people who are around. He becomes protective if someone comes to the door :pizza man etc...but where ever I take him he is just nosy. Even at the Vet's office recently there was a big...and I mean big Rot, and he sat there like "hey wanna play" following him lol. This is my first dog ever, but from the beginning I brought him around many different people so he would not be so "afraid". Even my hubby who never was into dogs, will come home from work and go play with him since the pup runs straight for the door at 515. Its the funniest thing to watch. Loves ESCOBAR !!!

  2. I've met one, but technically he was only half chihuahua.

  3. I went to the pet store once and I saw a Chihuahua and I took it to the room where you play with it and see if you want him, and he was very friendly :-)

  4. my  doggy is the best chiuahua

  5. I am a dog groomer and know 2 friendly chis.  Most chihuahuas do have big personalities, like a lot of the smaller breeds.  They are very capable of being vicious but I think a lot of this is how they are brought up.  A lot of chis live alone with one owner (usually elderly) and become over protective.  They are snappy because that is their only way of making you listen!!  I have had large breeds all my life until 5 years ago when I got a Bichon.  People are under the impression that small dogs aren't 'proper dogs', but they definitely are and if you treat them as a dog should be, you should have no trouble with them.

As for men being totally soppy over small breeds - I see it every day.  It is always, without exception, men who pamper toy dogs

  6. My best friend has a long hair chi and he is just as friendly as can be!!!!

  7. Both my Chihuahuas are adorably sweet. They rarely bark and love affection.

  8. i have just bought a chi x jackrussell.ive had him since he was a puppy.hes 6months old now and he is a little s**t! he has put a hole in my father in laws leather sofa(big enough to put his whole head in)he tries to eat the cat, hump my leg or the teddy he has got.he eats shoes, socks, mops, brooms.he growls and bites me all the time, but we all love him lol

  9. Hi Jane

Yes they are great little dogs. I have always had chihuahuas, and never met a bad one. All my girls and boys are well behaved and friendly. I love the breed so much i have a lot.

Your little chap sound lovely. im so glad that you are proud of him and happy with your choice.

Unfortunately lots of people are mis-lead and believe they are spoilt, viciously dogs,  when they are 100% lovable.

Please feel view to view my chi's via my blog, lots of photos of them there.

The only time when i have none one of my boys to show his teeth, was when he was injured and i wanted the vet to look at it. I had to muzzle him to be on the safe side, but he was in a lot of pain, and now 100% better after pain relief and antibitic injection.

Great dogs, enjoy your little chap.

    All the best Maria

  10. My neighbors have a lovely one called chi chi, she is a lover not a fighter.   She is the sweetest dog and little overweight so people never think that she is a chihuahua.  I think the small breed gets a bad rap because they get scared of people easily and bark if they are not around different people all the time.  My neighbors dogs is around lots of different people and she is a sweet thing.

  11. Our friend owns two very friendly Chis, and they're absolutely adorable. I think it has a lot to do with how they're raised - they're such small dogs that people often coddle them and treat them like they're toys rather than dogs. They need the same socialization and treatment as a larger dog. I think a lot of the aggression comes from simply being afraid!

I would love to get a long haired Chi - I think they're adorable!

  12. end of day its how you fetch the dog up watch the dog whisperer

  13. my chi we found in a 4-way intersection and nobody claimed her after a month!

as of right now, she is 2 years old as well

and is about 3 pounds, not getting any bigger

she never growls at anyone and hardly ever barks unless it is late

at night and she hears somebody coming past the room (like 12-1 late)

    she is a sweetheart

lol her name is chewy (my little brother named her because chewy came from chihuahua, not because she chews everything loll)

i love her to death :)

  14. hi, yes i have some chihuahuas and yes they are all good, friendly dogs. People say they are snappy, but these are the people who have not had one. Great dogs.

  15. I have met quite a few unfriendly chis!  However, once in awhile there will be a super sweet one - we know one at the dog park we go to.  One time a lady came with another chi and hers attached the sweet one.  I have always wanted one but I'm afraid I'll get a mean one.

  16. mine is the same way! and he is not a barker... he does yip and whine. he has nothing to do with those lil clothes...he does not like to be carried... he wants to walk. he is unsure around men but he is not nippy.

were just lucky and have well rounded chihuauas.

  17. Yes, I own two friendly chi's. The oldest is 7yrs and he's a beautiful tri-colored short hair and my little one is 6mo and she's a gorgeous reverse brindle also a short hair.

Your right I often have the same thing happen to me when I tell someone about my dogs. When they meet them, they always say something along the lines that I must have the only nice chi's as ALL the others are horrible! Looking at some of the answers to your question I can see that my chi's are not the minority. Rather makes you wonder if, as with ALL other dogs, you need to train and socialize them properly.
