  1. To answer your question. Practically everyone makes a camcorder with a charger that you can connect to a computer.

  2. Yes.

  3. Most consumer-grade camcorders do both. it's common for camcorders to come with USB cables, and the software to install on the computers.

Brand: I like Sony... partly the company...and name... but also, they are the ONLY camcorder which has infrared night vision, and works in ZERO lux (complete darkness). Sony holds the rights on that technology for camcorders. Now, security cams... lots of security cams have IR nightvision.

Panasonic is a good brand... with good features... but not zero-lux. It's not bad for 'low-light', but... all cams in low-lux mode are gonna look not so hot.

Do not buy a camcorder which loads from the bottom. it's a hassle, esp. if using a tripod, monopod, or just handling it.

One brand, which starts with a 'C'... but I won't name, is for suckers. Cheap... plenty of issues... the company doesn't stand behind their products very well... although they claim to.

You can get a decent Sony for around $300 or so. If you go up to $500... even better.

Format is another area you'll wanna research. I don't like camcorders which burn DVD's inside the camera. Battery life, media issues, and other stuff about it doesn't impress me at all. Mini DV is still a good bet. 1 hour tapes... reusuable... still 100% digital video and audio (stereo, or 2-channel mono)... some cams can do audio overdubbing, which is handy. Memory cards, if their capacity is large enough, may be ok. Video takes up ALOT of filespace... I'd be looking for X gigs... not megs of capacity.

Most decent brands (Sony, Panasonic) allow you to xfer files directly to the computer... or, 'capture'. Some allow you to record on tape, AND/OR memory card. Some alow you to transfer from tape to memory card, then xfer to computer. Sony let's you take still photos as well as video... and, to take stills from the tape playback... and those still files will xfer to the computer. When connected to a computer, the cam shows up as an external drive.

Again... if you go with Sony... you'll be set for any kind of situation.... light, dark, total black. This is what ghost hunters use.
