I believe American biscuits tend to be savoury and eaten with a meal as apposed to British biscuits which are sweet and eaten as a snack. Do you have a good recipe for American biscuits? Must be vegan!!!

  1. 2 cups unbleached all purpose flour

    1 Tbsp. baking powder

    1/2 tsp. salt

    4 Tbsp. cold margarine

    3/4 cup cold soya milk

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Put all the ingredients into a bowl. Using a pastry cutter or a fork, blend the margarine into the dry ingredients until the mixture breaks down into fine particles. Add the soya milk and stir until the particles cling together. Turn out onto a floured bread board or countertop and knead for 1 to 2 minutes or until the dough is smooth. Add more flour as needed if the dough is sticky.

Roll the dough out to about a 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into rounds (a drinking glass works well), place on an ungreased cookie sheet, and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot.

  2. Savory Biscuits

    Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 2/3 cups unbleached white flour

        1/3 cup nutritional yeast flakes

        1 teaspoon dried herbs

        5 teaspoons baking powder

        1 teaspoon salt

        5 tablespoons margarine

2 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar

1 cup vegan milk (soy or rice)

    Directions:

    Preheat oven to 450°.

Mix the flour, nutritional yeast flakes, herbs, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Cut the margarine into the flour mixture until mixture is crumbly.

Measure the 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into the bottom of a one cup measure. Top the cup off with soy or rice milk. Stir gently and let sit for a minute to curdle.

Add the “buttermilk” to the flour mixture and stir into a ball of dough.

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1 inch thick. Cut biscuits with a sharp cutter and place on lightly oiled cookie sheet.

Bake approximately 10-12 minutes in a 450° degree oven.

    Serves: 12-14

    Preparation time: 15 minutes

  3. Since you are British I'm not sure if you can get Baking powder.  this uses cream of tartar and Soda. If you can find BP, use 1 tablespoon.

    2 cups flour

    1/3 instant mashed potatoes

    1/2c shortening or vegan margarine

    1/2t Salt

    3/4 t baking soda

    2 tsp cream of tartar

    1 cup cold water

    Chill all dry ingredients

If using margarine partially freeze and shred into flour using a hand grater.  Cut into flour with other dry ingredients until it has a cornmeal like texture with pastry cutter or whisk(about 5 minutes)

Pour wet into dry and give about 5 stirs. let the flour absorb the liquid.  Stir a few more times and turn onto a board.  Fold dough over several times until just barely consistant. Gently roll out to 3/4" and cut with a 2" wide floured wine glass or biscuit cutter.

Bake on an ungreased sheet 1/4" apart at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

  4. Someone answered margarine which obviously isn't vegan but Smart Balance makes an alternative butter which is vegan and tastes exactly like butter.  I'm sure that there are websites online that can give you recipes for vegan biscuits.
