Please help, especially if you speak Vietnamese. I need to get from Hanoi to Hong Kong. Someone told me about taking trains ... if I understood correctly, it takes two days from Hanoi to Hong Kong by train (?)

It seems there is so much to do in Vietnam. I'm worrying a lot about running out of time. If I have any problem at the Vietnam/China border I might miss my flight from Hong Kong back home. Hong Kong and Hanoi don't seem that far, but I can't seem to find ANY cheap flights from Hanoi to HK. I was wondering if there might be a vietnamese website that offers cheap flights or any other website that offers cheap flights to Hong Kong. If you know of any, or speak vietnamese and can find one, PLEASE help.

  1. I'm a Vietnamese born, growing up there, & fluent in Vietnamese. There are trains from Vietnam crossing the border to China; however, I'm not quite familiar if there's one particularly between Hong Kong & Vietnam. People often fly between these 2 destinations, and it's normally a 2 hrs. fly.

**It's so unfounded & surprising to me &  those who know about Vietnam & Vietnamese people as a whole, to see Johncharlesrealty's comments about Vietnam & how a "college kid" and/or a "white woman" like you (in Johncharlesrealty's words) would be mistreated in Vietnam, especially by a whole bunch of Vietnam war Vets, western men & expatriates who, in general, hate white women.

It may be true that some Vietnamese companies rather hire men over women (& vice versa, women over men), but that doesn't mean that women are being singled out & discriminated against in the work place. Unfortunately, what Johncharlesrealty stated is absolutely baseless, misconstruing, far-fetched from the facts of what's going on in Vietnam.  It's nothing other than a mere misconception in his part, if not a total rubbish.

I've had friends (some are Caucasian females) who've gone there living & working. They've all had a good time in Vietnam.

Perhaps, you'd tell us all of your experience after you've been there. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a memorable & pleasant one.

    Welcome to Vietnam !

Bon Voyage, enjoy your stay in Vietnam & good luck !

  2. I am Vietnamese, I speak Vietnamese, read , write fluently. Vietnamese didnt mean to rip you off. They didn't mean it. Seriously.

Cheap flights to Hong Kong?Try Vietnam Airline.

  3. i was in hongkong and made the trip to hanoi last fall. we took the train from hongkong to guangzhou and flew out of guangzhou. it was expensive, but cheaper than flying out of hongkong.

during our stay in vietnam we worked our way north up the coast to the chinese boarder and decided to cross for the afternoon and return that evening. it is very easy to cross the boarder if you fill out the paperwork and have the proper visas. at these boarders you may have a bit of a problem filling out the forms and finding someone to translate may take a bit of time, but that will be your only delay.

the bus from hanoi to this boarder which is the closest geographically to hongkong is about an 8 hour bus ride. it is well worth the trip.

spend a few days at ha long bay which is about the half way point and one of the treasures of the world. its beauty can't be described.

from the china side just hop on one of the motorcycles that are at the boarder waiting for travelers and get a quick ride to the train station. it's a challenge if your chinese and/or vietnamese is almost nonexistent like mine, but its so much fun. both places are very safe and the trip is well worth the time and money.

    good luck

  4. you'll be able to buy all your tickets speaking english either at the train station or at a tour office... some places [ not all ] require you to purchase the ticket a day in advance.. other places wont sell you a ticket till day of departure... check as soon as you get into "town" and be flexable w/ your schedual... always have a back up plan and go with the flow....  this is the most important thing to remember... things will NOT go as planed... but there will always be an alturnative , be ready and be flexable  , enjoi your adventure... and look at it as an adventure... because thats the way it will end up...  you'll have plenty of stories to tell when you get home... hope to hear from you then... now GO!!

  5. Western woman get ripped off bigtime in Vietnam.. Watch your money.  Vietnam is no place for a white western woman to be.  All the white men or western men, most are vets and expats. can't stand you.  Some of the Vets there and the local expats would never help you.   Saigon is full of vets and expats and western men that hate white woman.. Remember how the college kids from back in the day protested the war and disrespected them??  Remember how the western white woman gave them the shaft after a divorce?? I know mostly all the vets there. There are certain cafe's that are VET friendly..  NO college kids welcome ( not that thre are many ) expecially white woman.  If you walked in they would actually tell you - OUT!! OUT OUT!! s***w!   Stick to japan or China - Saigon is no place for a woman tourist.   And, another thing - get ready to be treated like a woman by the Asian men...You will be told what to do and discrimminated against.  Its funny when you open the paper there for the help wanted section and see WOMAN - DO NOT APPLY. We Don't want a woman for this job...

  6. You can not take train go to Hong Kong from Vietnam because there is only train inside VN. You should try to ask some plane agents (except Vietnam airline-only one in Vietnam and dont have cheap flight)) to find out the cheap flights, such as : Lufhansa, Thai airway, Tiger airway,....

  7. depending on when you are travelling.  Look up airasia on the net.  This offers very cheap flights through out asia.  You need to book the flight over the net approx two weeks b4 travel to get it really cheap.  good luck
