Do you know about a ship that sunk in Hong Kong in 1944?

In summer/fall of 1944, my grandmother boarded a ship in Hong Kong to go to China. The ship hit a sea mine not very far from shore (still in Hong Kong harbour) and sunk. Does anyone have any information about this event? Such as the name of the ship? The exact date of this tragedy? Unfortunately I do not have any relatives left who can give me any more details.

I have tried searching in various online reference sources, but many do not have online archives going that far back. Also being wartime, there are lots references to sinking ships, but I cannot find this particular incident. Any information/help that can provided will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. several possible sources of information- Lloyd's of London has a register of all ships lost at sea. The Hong Kong harbour authority will also know. If your grandma was rescued from the sea then there are probably records - hospital treatment, sea rescue/ lifeboat services, etc. If you know the route the ship was to take then you might identify the company- but then this was a time of war so it is unlikely that there were any regular lines

Any idea of the size of the ship? this would simplify the search somewhat. Also an exact date would help- or at least the time of the year.
