  1. id buy the oxbow alfalfa based foods and give them alfalfa hay. most rabbit foods are timothy based, also.

and what the first poster said is true, oxbow is amazing and i would deff recommend it.

remember that after 6months, the rabbits need to be switched to timothy hay and timothy based foods (oxbow makes a pellet that is timothy based that i feed my rabbits)

    good luck with your bunnies!

  2. So funny because I think all or at least most rabbit pellets are made from alfalfa and with a little research, heres what I found.  Where do you live?

    Nutriphase

Ingredients: Dehydrated alfalfa meal, ground oats, ground wheat, soybean meal,

    ZuPreen

Ingredients: Sun-cured Timothy Grass Hay, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Corn, Dried Beet Pulp,

    Kaytee

Ingredients: Sun-cured Timothy Grass Hay, Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Oats,

    Alliance Nutrition

    Ingredients

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal, Dehulled Soybean Meal, Wheat Middlings, Soybean Hulls, Cane Molasses

So here is what I am thinking. It looks like most feeds sold in stores like Wal Mart and Petco are not necessarily Alfalfa based,  I buy my feed from feed stores and get a feed like Purina and it will be Alfalfa based.  I think if the diet is made specifically for rabbits it will not be as important as the hay you feed your rabbit.

Here is a site that talks about rabbit nutrition:

  3. Yes, you can use timothy based pellets and use alfalfa hay as the supplement. You'd still need to feed timothy hay too though.

Most pellets are alfalfa based. If you look at the ingredients, the first one is usually alfalfa. Timothy pellets usually identify themselves on the bag.

Oxbow's is called Bunny Basics 15/23

That's one of the best brands out there.

  4. Baby rabbits should have alfalfa based pellets. It has more protein for them that they need to grow.

    Here's one

It is sold at Petsmart and other places.

They also make a timothy based pellet for when they are older.

  5. If they are babies/under a year old go with alfalfa based pellets and a mix of timothy and alfalfa hay. Oxbow's Bunny Basics 15/23 is a very high quality, alfalfa based feed for young rabbits: http://www.oxbowhay.com/Shop/showProduct...
