Im not talkin English like America. Im talking English like England. If you know of any slang please tell me whether its used in England or Scotland and what it means.

  1. chips are french fries

    crisps are potatoe chips

    trousers are pants

    pants are underwear

    bloke is a man

    quid is slang for british pound (money)

    lift is elevator

    fortnight is two weeks


  2. In Aberdeen, they say "Fit like?" which means "How are you" !

  4. Mate, bloke, love, duck, lad, lass - all terms for people

    Ars.e, knobhead, dic.khead, bollocks, shite, shithead, wanker- all swear words

    Dope, plonker, plank, slapper, tosser- minor insults

    Bladdered, smashed, trashed, hammered, pissed, plastered - drunk

    Brew, cuppa- cup of tea

    Minger- someone incredibly ugly

    Mint, ace, top man, sick, wicked, cool- good

    ... That's pretty much the extent of my vocabulary

  5. Looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp - someone's not been graced with good looks!

    Dodgy boiler - similar to above, usually a woman

    Dodgy geeza - bloke who's a bit rough looking, or sneaky looking

    Fancy a cuppa - cup of tea, but could be coffee too

    Taking the p**s - teasing someone (taking the mickey is the more polite version).  Skitting is a North West expression for the same thing.

    Sling your hook - go away

    Rigout - new outfit (usually bought for going out for the night)

    Fancy a swift half - going to the pub, usually for a few more than one swift half (pint).

    Cockney Rhyming slang is one of the most famous:

    Butcher's hook - a look (often shortened to a 'butchers') as in 'giz a butchers at that'........give me a look at that

    apples and pears - stairs

    Rosie Lee - tea

    Barney Fair - hair

    Trouble and strife - wife

    Ruby Murray - curry

    etc etc etc

    Yes - Aye

    No - Naw

    And they tend to shorten sentances and words .
