  1. I believe the literature that says that coconut oil acts differently than other saturated fats.  Also, if you use lime and/or kaffir (lime) leaves, it helps the breakdown of the fats.  I use coconut oil for cooking in small amounts, and am convinced of its efficacy.

  2. The reasons almost all the discussions about it are positive is that it's a very healthy oil... but Ella L does hit the right subject. Any time that you have too much of any oil, it can be bad for you... too much of anything can be bad.

However, it would take a LOT of Coconut Oil to cause trouble for your Cholesterol because while it may be saturated fat, that saturated fat is made up of MCTs (Medium-Chain Triglycerides), which your body metabolizes quickly for energy. That's why Coconut Oil is a very healthy alternative to most any other oil or butter, even for cooking purposes.

If it's taken in moderation (which all oils should be) and you're not allergic to coconuts, any good quality VCO won't have any adverse effects.

  3. It is extremely high in saturated fat.

Its is about 90% saturated fat, so if you take large amounts then you are at risk of high cholesterol, atherosclerosis and the associated cardiovascular diseases.
