  1. Where I grew up, the west end of Pittsburgh, PA has a fascinating history.  There is this one suburb, Crafton, that has a very assorted mix of old Victorian houses that survived the Great Flood of 1936.  Also, in the center of that town is one of the few traffic circles in the entire region called the "Crafton Circle."  Looking at the circle from a map, it is five roads that come to a center to make up a north points five way intersection.

To top it off, the inner circle of the garden inside the traffic circle is exactly nine feet in diameter.  One friend I took there looked at the town name can said. "Is that short for 'Craft Town' as in witchcraft?" and it got me thinking.  Who knows!

Love to see what is hidden away in the attics and cellars of all those Victorian houses nearby.

  2. Coolum Beach, Queensland, Australia.

My home town has one of the few monoliths in the country (a solitary large rock/mountain in an otherwise flat area) and it's origin is told in an Aborigine dreamtime story that recalls how the landmarks of the area came to be. I remember being told this story when I was a kid, and even now it still makes me a little tearful.

Coolum and Ninderi were two warriors, both in love with a woman named Maroochydore. She loved Coolum, and Ninderi was so embittered and hurt by the rejection that he challenged Coolum in battle.

They both fought for days, until finally Maroochydore couldn't take it anymore and cried out for them to stop. Coolum, concerned by her shouting, turned to face her - giving Ninderi the opening he needed to strike the killing blow.

He lopped off Coolum's head with one swing of his club, which fell into the ocean and became an Island (known today as Old Woman's Island, just off the coast). Maroochydore cried for her fallen love, and so many tears were shed that the woman melted into a river that bares her name. Ninderi, ashamed of his actions, curled away and turned into a mountain.
