Do you know any point and shoot digital camera with 2/3" sensor?

I am not talking about DSLR but advanced point and shoot. So far I have only found the Fujifilm Finepix S100fs but this product is three years old and the lense is rather large. I´d love to have a modern camera with this type of sensor! BUT I CAN NOT FIND IT!!!

  1. The Sigma DP1 has an APS-C sized sensor.  Read the reviews carefully before you buy because it's awesome in some ways and lacking in others.    Realistically, I suggest you settle for something with a 1/1.7" or 1/1.8" sensor if you want a good point and shoot.

  2. So you want it to have 2/3" sensor AND a small lens?

Guess why S100fs's lens is large?

    Mmmm.... that's because it's got 2/3" sensor!

The two come in a set. To project an image on a larger sensor you need a larger lens. That's why all those SLR's come with these bulky large lenses you can't stuff in a purse!

So you'll have to give it another thought. Advanced cameras come in advanced sizes. If you get a 2/3" camera with small lens, you'll probably end up with something ultra-wide and very slow f/stop and probably poor quality. But why would a manufacturer put their money into the expensive large sensor just to stick a poor piece of optics in front of it? But making a good 2/3" camera with good optics does not come out cheap...

That's why they don't make 2/3" cameras anymore. Since the prices of SLR's gone down so much, it would make no sense to make this camera, which they would be forced to price in the same range you can get an SLR with 1.5x crop factor (which is several times larger than 2/3") and comes with interchangeable lenses and all advantages of an SLR, like fast focusing, short shutter lag, and plenty more.

Just look at Finepix S100fs you mentioned. It is almost as large as an SLR, and has the similar look, but no interchangeable lens and not as fast, but it costs close to $700. Why would you want it, if you can have a Nikon D40 with 18-135mm lens for less than that?

    LEM.

Please read your question again, it's just three lines, and right in line two there's mention that large lens of S100fs is not satisfactory to you. So I take it that size of a lens is a concern to you, or else why did you mention it as being one of only two reasons you disliked the camera? You also seem frustrated that you can't find the camera with 2/3" sensor (you even yelled out at the end that you can't find it). I answered your question trying to address every concern you expressed in original question.

    1. There is no such camera in current production

    2. It's impossible to make good camera with 2/3" sensor and small lens (addressing quoted concern)

    3. Explained WHY there is no such camera on current market: because you can get a much better camera in similar size for less money.

What part of it did you find critical?

  3. If you are talking about an aspect ratio of 3:2 then there are one or two. Sigma makes one but it costs about as much as an SLR and doesn't have any zoom. The plus side is that it has a huge sensor in comparison to most point and shoots. It uses the same size sensor as is used in SLR cameras. See the link below.

If you really want a 3:2 ratio you are better off buying an SLR. The only exception is Olympus. They use a 4:3 ratio like point and shoot cameras. Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony all use a 3:2 ratio.
