  1. La Llorona is the weeping woman.

The storie goes that that Maria had fallen in love with a simple farmer who had a bad tendency to drink.  Her marriage was less than fulfilling and when she caught the eye of a local wealthy man, she gave herself to him.  However, her husband caught her one night, and in a fit of rage he threw their two children into the river.

Maria ran after the children, but she fell and dashed her head against a rock where she died.

Now she stalks the arroyos and rivers seeking her children and capturing others who are alone at night by the water.

Now, the legends is all fun and good, but is it real?  I happen to know she really does walk the banks of the San Juan because when I was young, my brother and I were fishing.  I got mad at him when he unleashed my thread of fishes and I left him there, alone in the dark.

I heard her calling out to her children, and I believed I could see her in the trees.  But I didn't want to tell my brother.  He would see her and maybe it'd frighten him into being nicer to me.  But he didn't hear her.  She drew closer, and when he finally noticed the odd white light, she was upon him.

He screamed and fought.  I ran after to help him, but she drew him into the water, and the last thing i saw of him was his hand clawing the bank rocks.
