I don't want to use eBay, and i've tried craigslist. I want like a pawn shop in the Atlanta area or a department store like Macy's, Dillards, or something like that. Got any?

  1. You don't say what kind of item this is, but department stores like Macy's or Dillard's do not buy from individuals, primarily because they need usually need dozens or hundred of something rather than a single item.  Besides, if you are selling something used (even something like jewelry), that's not the sort of thing they handle.

Your best bet is to go a small store that sells the same sort of thing.  If it is jewelry, then a small independent jeweler (NOT a chain) may be interested.  There are jewelery stores in Atlanta, for example, that specialize in "estate" jewelry.  That would be a good bet.  Or, if your item  is an antique, try an antiques dealer.  Whatever it is, the principle is the same: go to small stores, not big ones.  Big stores have purchasing offices, lots of forms and procedures, and no way to deal with someone like you.

Keep in mind that any store will give you only a "wholesale" price.  If your item would sell for, say $100, they may only pay $50 to you.  The difference is what pays for their own rent, utilities, staff and profit. But that's still better than going to a pawn shop.  Pawning an item means taking a loan on it.   The item is collateral for the loan.  So the pawn shop knows that it might have to sell your $100 item for $50, which means they might only give you, say, $25 in pawn.  Pawning is a quick way to get money, but you don't get very much that way.

Again, without knowing what you are selling, it is hard to advise you about the best way to sell.  Is it something that has to be demonstrated?  Do you make it yourself or is there just one of them that you happen to own?  You have to consdier things like this.  Maybe you should get your own Web site to sell your item, or maybe you should find people who use the item in business or collect things like it.  (You would be astounded about what kinds of things people collect.)  Maybe you should take it to a craft show, or to a business products show, or something like that.

I realize I haven't given you a definite answer, but I hope this helps.  Good luck!!

  2. Go to http://www.switchboard.com and look for pawn shops and enter Atlanta GA for the location to get a complete list of pawn shops in Atlanta.  Remember they are buying for resale so will not give the price you would get from an individual and you will need drivers license or other picture iD
