  1. (I'm sorry, the descriptions are really long. I hope you take your time to read them, it will be worth it!)

I'm not sure about series, but here are some wonderful books:

The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

In The Truth About Forever, Dessen depicts a young woman coming to terms with the tragic death of her father. Macy Queen likes order and control, that's the only way she can keep her grief from consuming her. But a summer spent working with a boy named Wes slowly begins to thaw the ice that's been surrounding Macy's heart. Wes teaches her that forever isn't always about goodbyes and love doesn't always have to hurt.

Socrates in Love by Kyoichi Katayama

There are a few different types of romance books. In some books, there's an initial attraction between the boy and girl but the initial attraction is all you see. This book is very different in that the inital attraction almost wasn't there in the beginning. It was more like, 'Boy sees girl- boy acknowledges girl- boy sees girl for what she really is- boy falls in love with girl'. This is the base of the whole plot for this book.

The thing that I liked the most was that, while there was interaction between Aki and Sakutaro, you could also see into Saku's mind and feel what he was feeling. He didn't automatically just yell out "Aki I love you!" but instead he takes the time to contemplate everything and with Kyoichi Katayama's writing, you can clearly see and feel the conflicting emotions.

Intertwined with the love story between Aki and Saku is story of how Saku lived after Aki passed away. The relationship that they had was a very special one and after she's gone it leaves him quite lost. Katayama did an amazing job of describing Saku's feelings of loss, disappointment, and anguish by using simple words and adding in long, in-depth conversations between Saku and his grandfather. These conversations make up the most touching parts of the book.

All in all, this book deals with the type of relationship that everyone hopes for but not everyone find, and what happens when that amazing relationship comes abruptly to an end. The tragedy intertwined with love makes for an enduring tale. I'm so glad it was translated for us here in the US!

    Kamikaze Girls by Novala Takemoto

Life in the boondocks of rural Ibaraki prefecture is anything but glamorous, and to escape her humdrum existence, Momoko, a Lolita, fantasizes about French rococo, dreams of living in the palace of Versailles, and decks herself out in the finest (and frilliest) of 18th century haute couture from an expensive Tokyo specialty store.

Her dreams of an idyllic existence are rudely interrupted by the appearance of Ichigo, a tough-talking Yanki motorcycle-chick (on a tricked-out moped) who leads a girls-only biker gang known as the Ponytails. Together, this unlikely duo strikes out on a quest to find a legendary embroiderer, a journey that takes them to back-alley pachinko parlors, chic boutiques, and epic bike-punk battles.

    -(from KFCC)

Maximum Ride by James Patterson (this one is actually a series)

This novel centers around six lab experiments, ranging from six to fourteen, that have bird-like wings which allow them to fly, and several individual superhero-like abilities of their own. They all obey to the commands of their fourteen-year-old leader, Max (full name, Maximum Ride, thus the series title). Max is loaded with heavy responsibilities that are far beyond her age such as protecting her friends from werewolf-like mutanic creations. The author, however, does not do a reasonable job of portraying Max as a leader. Throughout most of the book Max is seen using mildly offensive words and slang, and doing very irresponsible deeds. Max does demonstrate bravery, a necessary component of leadership. The book is told in first person by Max, and is written wtih very short chapters, and action packed sequences so that it may resemble a video game or action movie. This will intrigue many readers. One of the greatest cons of this book is how frequently Max uses slang, so much that it may become unbearable for some readers. This also makes the impression that Max is teasing or telling a joke. This book is an excellent choice for those who are not fond of reading, to began to read books. This book will get many people hooked!!
