The Boaz family opened the Covesville Store (a general store) in Covesville early in the 20th century.  That area of Albemarle County, Virginia, grew rapidly because of the apple orchards that thrived there.  There are still plenty of apples growing in the area.

If you box looks like it could have been an apple crate, it probably was.  If not, there is a good chance that it held something that was being shipped to the Covesville Store.
