  1. The forests of this community type are dominated by northern red oak, yellow birch, American beech and yellow buckeye.

    Northern hardwood forest occur in high mountains at elevations approximately between 4000 and 5500 ft in the southern Appalachians. They are dominated by deciduous trees and are found on upper slopes and high ridges. Due to high elevations with increased precipitation, these landscape positions are more mesic than slopes and ridges at lower elevations.

    The term hardwood designates wood from broad-leaved (mostly deciduous, but not necessarily, in the case of tropical trees) or angiosperm trees. Hardwood contrasts with softwood, which comes from conifer trees.

    Annual rainfall is typically over 600 millimetres (24 inches) and often over 1500 millimetres (60 inches).
