Yes, I certainly do know the difference, but was once shocked when speaking to a young man in the Cayman Islands who claimed to be from Dominica and hadn't heard of Jean Rhys. It turned out that he came from the Dominican Republic! (You would expect a native of the DR to know the difference!)

There was also confusion in the local prison when a prisoner from Dominica had completed his sentence and had to be returned home. They tried to send the poor man to the DR!
