  1. Not only do they reach speeds of 15m/sec (50 ft/sec) but they weigh up to five pounds (~2 kg) because they have that triangular-shaped  husk on them when they are on (or just off) the trees.  They shake the ground when they land!  WHUMP!

  2. That is EXACTLY what I've been asking myself latley.

    Stupid coconut trees....

  3. George Burgess, an employee of Florida's Museum of Natural History, claims that there is approximately a 15x greater chance of being killed by a falling coconut than bitten by a shark.  According to Dr. Peter Barss, 150 people are killed each year by falling coconuts.  There is no documentation to support either claim,  however.

I don't think we should declare war upon the coconut trees; there is no proof that they harbor weapons of life's destruction.  There is only hearsay, conjecture and assumptions perhaps prompted by undisclosed motives.

  4. No, but very few die.

  5. COCONUTS apparently kill around 150 people every year. Falling from a height of 80 feet, they can build up an impact speed of 50 mph.
