It's straightforward and you could do as others have suggested by going National Express.  It's as slow as h**l though, and one novel idea might be to getting a cheap flight to Prestwick (Ayrshire) and then getting a bus down.  Seems out of the way but would be quicker and could be equally as cheap.  Ryanair fly about three times a day from Stanstead and it's about an hour back down by bus from Ayr.

look at the National Express website www.nationalexpress.com ... you can go to Dumfries from Victoria coach station, it takes at least 8 hours (there's a map of where the coach terminates in Dumfries on the website too)

or you could take a train from Euston station, it takes about 5 hours, see www.thetrainline.com
