Does anyone know what I would have to do to convert an old cassette tape to a digital format so that I can use it on a DVD that I am making?

Thanks so much!

  1. Yep, do it like this:

Put simply, you will need to connect your cassette player to your PC soundcard, then play the cassette whilst recording on your PC. A step-by-step guide is available at:

    http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/DIY/index.p...

(follow the link to ‘Cassette to CD‘)

The recording software is the key, there are some free software downloads available at:

    http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads.p...

I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free!

If you record to WAV format, expect file sizes of around 10MB per minute, or 1MB per minute for MP3 (at 128kbps).

Once you have your digital versions of the recording on your PC, simply burn them on to a CD (Nero burning software or similar..). If you use Magix Audio Cleaning, the software will burn an audio CD for you without needing additional software (assuming you have a CD writing drive of course!)

You will need the additional 'lame_enc.dll' file to export into MP3 - this can also be downloaded from the free software page.

You can also download a free PDF version of the step-by–step guide from the download page mentioned above, the guide is complete with diagrams and screen-shots.

Hope this helps (if you like the online guide, don't forget to 'DIGG' it....)

  2. I did it like ten years ago by hooking a patch cord from a cassette player's headphone jack the the Line In on my computer. Sounded like c**p, though. An app like Audacity could be used to get rid of any unwanted hum or static.

Like I said, that was back in the Dark Ages.

  3. If you have a digital camcorder that allows you to INPUT analog video sources, you could feed the analog tape player into the digital device, and then capture the video to your PC by firewire (if you have a firewire input). Then you would have DV video that you could process into your DVD program.

  4. Try Sonic Stage...there are other programs, I guess. Play your cassette into the computer program one song at at time. When finished, you can make a CD (songs in any order) by selecting the correct icon.

I think there is a direct to CD 'stereo' but I'm not sure?
