  1. I don't think there has been (at least not a highly publicized one), probably because there is really not much need for it.

Unlike the tennis battle of the sexes (when supreme chauvinist Bobby Riggs was beaten soundly by classy Billie Jean King, starting the end an era when men's tennis got higher billing than women's tennis), women's and men's volleyball are fairly equally respected and respectful of each other.

Both are superb and exciting at the Olympic and college levels, and men's and women's college volleyball teams usually travel together and support each other strongly.

In other words - neither women's nor men's volleyball has anything to prove, and thankfully the sport doesn't have anyone like Bobby Riggs who needs to be taught a lesson!

  2. A friend of mine told me about a match between the US women's team against a team of celebrities.  There were men celebrities.  I heard the NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain played.  My friend told me that Wilt had a one handed block with his huge hands that Flo Hyman thought she was going to be able to hit.  He reached several feet across the net and wrapped his one hand around the ball and let Flo hit the ball.

This match was just before they started a co-ed pro league in the early 80's.

  3. There hasn't and shouldn't be. It wouldn't be competitive because a men's team has such an advantage over a womans team.

Take into consideration the height of net differences, height of players and so on.

There aren't many 6'6 women with 40 inch verts, where as not even professional, but just collegiate men, Div 1 the average front row height is closer to 6'9 with 30+ inch verts, Women wouldn't compete on a guys net and men would have an incredibly unfair advantage on a woman's net.

There isn't anything to prove, its 2 very different sports, and it's not necessary.

When our men's team played our womens team (we played co-ed, not vs) the men would have to hit out of the back row only to make sure it was fair. It wasn't fun bouncing 2s over girls. and did nothing to boost our confidence

  4. Not publicly, but believe or not back in the training facility, all good women's teams (especially some national teams at Olympic level) got trained by men's squad. In college (at least at my time) boys liked to help girls' team, and most time would like to lose to girls.

There has been no battle, ever.
