Do you know of a good saddle for someone just starting to jump?

I am an adult picking up jumping for the first time and want a secure feeling saddle. My instructor isn't very much help as she recommends super expensive saddles and I don't want to spend that much money yet.

  1. Your instructor recommends expensive saddles because they are generally better for your position and for your horse. The cheapest saddle I allow anyone in my barn to get is a Pessoa. Most of the Pessoa models are acceptable, though my favorite is the A/O. You can usually get them off ebay for $800-1200. My favorite saddle though is a County Stabilizer (the comfiest saddle I have ever sat it!!). They retail around $3000, but you can find one on ebay for $1800-2400. If you are going for something cheaper, you might look for a used saddle at your local tack shop (or ebay :)). You will find that with saddles, you really do get what you pay for.

  2. If you are just starting to jump, I would recommend an all purpose saddle.  When you find out how far and serious you become your jumping career, you can always invest in an expensive one later on.

One place I found a really inexpensive saddle was a pon shop or you could get a used one from an ad in the local newspaper.  I bought a really nice one from a couple that were getting a divorce.  It was great and hardly used too.

If I can be of any further assistance, please email me.

  3. all-purpose saddle, any brand, lesson saddle better b/c it'll be used for learning to jump, then later on go get a pro-saddle if you have the money/want to.

  4. I recommend a "Stubben Roxane S" (not the "VSS," they are different).  It is specifically a jumping saddle and is made to put you in the right position.  A lot of the top jumpers use this saddle.

Brand new Stubbens are quite pricey--this one retails for about $2,000.  I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" so I've always spent a bit more on my saddles.  And remember that if you take care of it, it will last you a LONG time.  If you look on eBay or at consignment shops you can probably get one much cheaper.

  5. Okay "Adult", I'm an old timer.  I recommend a Stubben Siegfried AP, you can do flat, jump and even a little dressage in it.  It's seat is DEEP and they hold their value.  Your trainer will probably want you in a close contact type saddle, BUT unless it's a HERMES, they seem to lose their value FAST.

Close contact saddles also don't do a LOT to keep your tush in the saddle.  I've had BOTH and my old Siegfried's going to hit 40 next year and it's still here.  Does that say something about it?

  6. Collegiate makes nice saddles, they are all leather and they run from $700 to $900+. You may want to get on craigslist and see what people are selling. Make sure you know what size seat (16, 17 etc) you need and what tree width you need to fit your horse (medium, narrow, wide). You could also look at the Wintec saddles, but they are synthetic and I prefer leather. Try looking at www.doversaddlery.com and see what they have.

  7. I'd say that if you're just starting to jump, purchase an all-purpose sadde. Ive been jumping for a few years now, and I still find the all-purpose more 'secure-feeling' than the stereotypical jumping saddle.  I ride in a Wintec sythetic saddle, and not only are they really comfortable and durable, they are affordable as well!!

    Check out their site-

  8. if heard a lot about Wintec in magazines  but i dont have a horse   so im not sure.    :)

  9. I ride in a Bates Caprilli Close Contact and it's the best saddle I've ever ridden in. It's around $1,500-$2,000 for a new one, but i think it's worth it. If you get an inexpensive saddle, the color will start rubbing off onto ur pants and it won't  hold together long. Saddles typically aren't going to last long if they're $400 or under. I would buy a used saddle that's good quality if I didn't want to spend much. You can always oil the saddle after you get it and it'll probably look tons better. Pessoas are also very good, but they're in the same price range as bates.

Make sure you sit in the saddle before you buy it. Good luck (:

  10. okay you'll defiantly want a all purpose saddle and you maybe want to look at circuit saddles there well made and not too expensive but the brand that i would say not to get is a wintec or kincade i just dont like them but thats my opinion.
