I'm wondering if a persons name could increase your chances of winning.

  1. Jim?

You don't give your name when you buy a lottery ticket, what the h**l are you talking about?

  2. I'm afraid a persons name is not going to make any difference to their chances of winning.

And if you did gather data about names and winners, to avoid making any misleading conclusions you would also need to factor in the number of people with each name who actually bought a ticket. That is, if ten thousand Jim's bought a ticket but only 5 Mary's, then Jim is more likely to appear to be a 'lucky' name, when the fact is there were just more of them. This kind of misconception regularly leads to misleading 'lottery systems' being created.

There's only one way a persons name is going to improve your chances, and that's changing your name to 'Winner'. It won't help you win the lottery but at least you will be a Winner for the rest of your life (just ask Michael). ;-)
