  1. St.James Palace otherwise known as the houses of parliament

The're off on there normal 4 months summer break

  2. no, sorry

  3. abandoned houses: two places I know (both a little way out from the centre - zone 4 or 5) are where road widening schemes are or were planned, and so a lot of houses became empty or were subject to compulsory purchase and have just lay derelict for some years since.

    i) is the unwidened stretch of the North Circular Road near Edmonton/ Palmers Green/ New Southgate - get the tube to Arnos Grove and just keep walking east along the main road until you get to them

ii) is (towards the northern end of) on Wickham Lane between Plumstead and Welling

Much closer to the centre there are LOTS of boarded up post-war council flats (generally boarded up with bright orange metal partitions) in blocks that Hackney Council are responsible for, all around the Hoxton/ Haggerston area - just wander around anywhere east of Kingsland Road (north of Liverpool Street station, east of Old Street station) and west of Queensbridge Road and you'll be bound to see them...

  4. I'm surprised you haven't alread come across Paul Talling's amazing photographic website, if you're doing derelict houses in London.

Here's a link to its section on houses and flats: http://www.derelictlondon.com/id1535.htm

Most of his pictures were taken in 2005/ 2006, but here's his updates for summer 2008 (check out the beautiful, forlorn house in Dulwich). http://www.derelictlondon.com/summer_200...

It's very easy to locate the houses -- I know a lot of the properties along the A40 were eventually demolished but I think some are still standing. You know what it's like when you use a busy road a lot -- you kind of stop seeing the stuff by the side of the road (specially if you're on a motorbike and trying not to become a traffic statistic!)

Love from a Londoner who hates seeing buildings left empty because of absentee landlords and grandiose town planning schemes.

  5. Each year English Heritage publishes a "Buildings at Risk" register, arranged by Borough. This normally includes photographs of historic buildings and an indication of ownership. Reference libraries and planning offices should have these. These are premises at fairly serious risk of further decay, so consequently many appear in more than one edition. Inevitably, most are too dangerous for an unaccompanied or informal visit, and some will not be visible from a public right-of-way. Cities Revealed, Google Earth or MSN Live - maps might assist you in gaining a visual impression of their state and accessibility prior to a visit.

  6. There are tons!  just go to any south London estate and you'll see the ones with the brown metal boards on top are abandoned.  The boards are to stop squatters getting in.

  7. I'm sure most have squatters in them.

  8. there's some boarded-up houses on the North Circular ... they are on the stretch of the A406 (North Circlar) between the A10 Great Cambridge Road and A105 Green Lanes ... I'm not sure why but it looks like they are under threat of compulsory purchase for road widening or something
