I live in a hurricane zone where flooding is natural because of a valley. It is now hurricane season. The situation in Missouri,Ohio, and some of the states that got flooded[by rivers] has heightened my awareness of the need for a water purification system.Bottled water is expensive[about $8 for 5 gallons] and we drink 20 gallons or more easily in a week. We got a Culligan system with a pitcher but it needed filters. We never figured out how to install the under the tap Culligan[ and my brother is both intelligent and good with his hands]. I have searched the internet but I do not want to spend money on something that is advertised as the best but complex to use or expensive [needing filters every 4-6 weeks]].We need a system that will give a warning when the filter needs changing. Is there anyone who uses a 'great' system or who can give some suggestions? We want to be prepared for any emergency. Help!

  1. Portable? Something like this?

I've used it before at a relatives house and it seems pretty good. It can take a little while for the water to go through the filter, though. Not too long, just a little inconvenient if you want it immediately. Changing the filter isn't hard, either.

  2. I bought an under the counter reverse osmosis system from Home Depot for $169.00 and it works great!!!!  Was simple to install, has a separate faucet for the 'good' water, a battery operated (like a wrist watch battery) light that lets you know when to change the filters and it very east to use, change filters and gives you water that taste as good as any bottled water you can buy!  We have very hard water here in Texas so I also installed a water softener.  They work so well together!  I have wonderful water for bathing, washing clothes and cooking too!I don't have to use much soap for dishes , bathing or laundry!  My whites are really white and my colors don't fade!  The water softener was about $600.00 but it's saving my money in the long run on soap, softener, shampoo, conditioner and keeping my clothing brighter!  No dingy lingering soap scum on the shower, bath tub or sinks!   My hot water heater isn't going through the heating elements like it did before either!   I save the

old gallon size milk jugs, washed them out good and just keep refilling them  with water and always have good cold clean great tasting water!
