  1. In Roma I've used hotel Planet on via Milazzo.  It's just to the north of the main railway station  and costs €120 a night at the moment.

  4. I stayed in the Hotel Lirico in Rome which I would thoroughly

recommend. It's easy to get to from either airport and it's not far from Roma Termini which is the main train station - and obviously if you're taking day trips that would be handy!

  5. In Florence I stayed at the Una Hotel Vittoria, it's fabulous!

  6. The Hotel Gioia is one of the best that I've stayed in in Florence in this price range. It's between the Duomo and the Accademia (David).

Another place that I like a lot is the Hotel Argentina. It's right on the Arno River, about a 10 minute walk from the Palazzo Vecchio.

A third option is the Nizza. This is also a nice place, but you need to know ahead of time that you'll be hauling whatever luggage you have up and down the stairs. Not a problem fo me since I live two hours away and just go for overnight trips some weekends, but not for everyone.

  7. In Florence we stayed at the Hotel Meridiana.  At first glance we weren't too happy, but once we got into the room we were happy.  It was small, but newly refurbished.  The breakfast was great.  It was off the beaten path, but 1 block for a bus stop and a 5 minute ride from the Termini.  We loved it.  The restaurants and bar tabacchis in the neighborhood were wonderful.  The breakfast was vast and varied.  Again in Rome we were off the beaten path at the Hotel Mariano.  This room was huge and had a shower to die for.  It also was newly redone with travertine floors, so bring slippers.  Great view of a piazza across the street.  The staff was not as helpful as other hotels we stayed in while in Italy, but it still was the most spacious room we stayed in and were very happy.
