exchange programs open to Canadian students? I want to go to Japan for an academic year.

AFS, as mentioned above, is one. YFU (Youth for Understanding) is another. I know YFU offers some nice scholarships to Japan for American students. Possibly they do for Canadian ones as well -- worth a check.

You should also check into Rotary Youth Exchange.

Those three are probably the best with exchanges to Japan.

In 2009 I'm leaving for a year in Japan. I choose American Field Services or AFS. You can visit thier website here >>http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/home . There's an online application too. Good luck! (It's not just for America though)
