  18. 1. Yes, I am such an Old Man, I remember when my father often came home from work early to have a "Nooner," at exactly 3:00 PM, with mommy or the maid, or sometimes both. I loved watching their toes curl. hehehehehehehe

    2. No, that is impossible. The "very first MATCH was created in 1805," while .... " ... the first lighter was invented 18 years later in 1823."

    SEE:

"The first lighter, Döbereiner's lamp, was invented by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823. It stayed in production until 1880.The first "match" was created in 1805. The first friction match, which can be ignited on virtually any surface (i.e. fabric) was created in 1827, 4 years after the lighter.[1]

You did not specify that it was the ... "The first friction match, which can be ignited on virtually any surface (i.e. fabric) was created in 1827, 4 years after the lighter." ****

    3. Of course I knew that one. Vinegar is quite acidic and is often used to "erode" lime and calcium deposits left by "hard" water; and, that pearls are simply calcium depoits to cover an irritant in a clam type shellfish.

    4. Generally yes, but not specifically that exact figure. Being an Engineer, I can visualize the cross-sectional area of each hair and its individual tensile strength, which is incredibly high, just before breaking. Considering its area, it has tremendous tensile strength. The combined strength of the woven hairs is the sum (∑) of the individual tensile strengths of each of the 100,000 hairs.

I saw a picture of a very fat lady that had all of the hair on her head tightly braided and held by a clevis and a chain. She was pulled up off of the stage floor by about 3'-5'. I estimate that she must have weighed at least 10 tons. (LOL) I believe that is within the usual Engineering margin of error.

P.S.: Oh, yes, and it did not hurt a bit. I did not feel a thing when they raised her from the floor.

    :) ...  :) ...  :) .....   LOL

    And, my contribution.

Did you know that a spider's web's tensile strenght is greater the the same cross sectional area of steel?

"The tensile strength of spider silk is greater than the same weight of steel and has much greater elasticity. Its microstructure is under investigation for potential applications in industry, including bullet-proof vests, and artificial tendons. Researchers have used genetically modified mammals to produce the proteins needed to make this material." *****
