I know they have an extremely short range. It's been experimented with off and on since the 1920s. There used to be air compressed locomotives used in mines where exhaust would be dangerous. These locomotives had the advantage of using the entire boiler to hold compressed air. But still, they were only practical for the short distances with in a mine shaft.
