There are quite a few cities collecting methane from sewers and dumps. To bad it only supplies a small part of the energy needs of those cities.

It's done in many places, and quite a bit in the larger industrialized places. Just a little fresh manure to "seed" methanogens and then keep them fed will produce a lot of methane. The problem is that a large amount of food is needed and it still produces a lot of CO2, both in the fermentation tank and with the burning. If one takes the time to check that, it is quite an additional boon.
