Hello, I have a Miniature Wired Hair Dachshund. She is turning 5 this October and we really want to breed her. Is she to old? Also this spring she had some back problems. My parents still want to breed her but are a little hesitant. Would it be okay if we did? Will she be ok if we do breed her. Also we need to find her a stud soon so please give me a good website.

  1. Please do not breed your Dachshund.  She is far too old and with a history of back problems she should never carry a litter of pups.  There are thousands of dogs, including Dachshunds, that are euthanized every day in this country because of over population.

  2. Oh man, if your dog is having back problems, especially in a breed prone to back problems, she is just not breeding quality, I'm sorry.  The only reason to breed a dog should be to genetically better the breed (genetic match made in heaven), to improve a breeds physical traits, temperament, and ability to do the job it was bred for.

If dogs were an endangered species I might have a different opinion.  But there aren't enough homes for the ones that are alive today, let alone all the ones being born tomorrow.

  3. Yes, she is probably to old to breed, plus her back probably wouldn't handle the extra weight carrying pups. My miniature dachshund who is a little over 2 years now is having a little bit of a hard time carrying pups. Could you imagine her if she was 5 years old? If you did breed her she would most likely have a miscarrage. I'm sure the dog is worth more than that. If she had any complications it can kill her. Not just she is getting old, but she's had back problems to. Now, do you still think breeding her is a good idea?

  4. It would be wise not to breed your dog. She is too old. And being that she suffers from back problems her offspring are more than likely to suffer from the same back problem and it may become more severe to the offspring. And will cause heart ache to the adoptive parents of the babies.

  5. Dont breed your dog, there are plenty of poor and loyal dogs in the shelters, for every pup that you bring into this world , a shelter dog loses its life.

Anyways, shes too old, and if you did breed her, which I would not recomend, the puppies might inherit those back problems.

  6. 5 is a little too old to breed, expecially if this is a first litter.  Many breeders retire their females at that age!

Also if she's having back problems, then its not adviseable to breed her.  This puts her at an increased risk for complications.  You'd also be passing her back problems along to future generations.

No reputable stud owner will consider breeding his dog to yours.  A good stud will be looking for a CH'd female who has passed all genetic health tests (OFA, CERF, BAER, Optigen).. and is young enough to breed successfully.

Please do her a favor and spay!

  7. 1.  Your dog is too old to breed.  There are too many inherent problems with breeding older bit*ches, especially for the first time.

    2.  Your dog has back problems which make it a double whammy and increase the risk of needing a caesarian which is VERY expensive ($1500 where I live).

    3.  No decent breeder will allow you to use her stud dog which would be health checked and most likely have a Championship title.  They would also expect your bit*ch to have all the requisite health checks as well.

  8. I wish I had a a dachshund.

  9. please don't breed your dog to many animals end up in shelters and end up being killed if they aren't adopted... don't get me wrong i LOVE puppies but i hate the idea of dogs getting killed cuz someone didn't give them a good home

  10. Yes she is too old to be having her first litter. Get her fixed as she has had back problems as well. No one with a male who is worthy of being a stud will even consider your dog. Secondly you do not go looking on websites for a suitable stud.
