  1. Edith Piaf's career began in the mid-1930s, so she can certainly be said to be a WW2-era singer.  She was the most famous, beloved, and tragic of French singers.

While Piaf was primarily a singer of popular music, coloratura soprano Lily Pons - whose career started before Piaf's, and ended about three years before Piaf's death - was France's foremost classical and opera singer of the time.

  2. Édith Piaf might be the most famous one, but she had her hits in the period right after the war. (first major hit in 1946 i believe)

  3. The best known was Edith Piaf, nicknamed The Little Sparrow, (19 December 1915—10 October 1963).

Look her up on Wikipedia for her full history.

  4. Édith Piaf (19 December 1915—10 October 1963) was a French singer and cultural icon who "is almost universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer."[1] Her singing reflected her life, with her specialty being the ballads. Among her famous songs are "La vie en rose" (1946), "Hymne à l'amour" (1949), "Milord" (1959), "Non, je ne regrette rien" (1960), and Padam Padam.

  5. Edith Piaf.

Her nickname was, "La Môme Piaf" (The Little Sparrow).
