  1. John C. Berry died near a hole and fell in.  The people covered him up as a practical joke.  Then they noticed they didn't have to smell his rotting corpse and decided to "berry" all their dead.

  2. Actually, funerals are a way of honoring the dead and can be dated back to the earliest civilizations, Mesopotamia and so on.  In the earlier days of civilization, bodies were burned on a funeral pyre and games were played in honor of warriors or great leaders.  This was done due to the smell of a rotting corpse.

The Greeks viewed it a great insult in times of war for an enemy to not allow them to gather their dead and burn them on a funeral pyre, so that the dead could move on to the afterlife.

It wasn't until Jewish/Christian ideals came along that we started burying the dead in tombs or digging graves as a way of honoring and preserving the soul.

  3. ==Ah, the pre bucket list= since the beginning of time= maybe no prayer at first just to get rid of the smell== but as time moved along we realized something should be said, that was the real inventor== interesting question, but don't have the time to dig through all those funerals to find his or her name= but it started long before the wheel=
