  1. It is probably very hard for you to select a best answer.

I can assure you, however, that pilots are NOT permitted during any stage of flight under any circumstances to sleep whatsoever.

As I said already, the autopilot CANNOT control each and every stage of flight. There is a lot of programming that goes into automating a specific flight. One must take into account Air Traffic Control turns (called headings), altitude assignments, etc. that can otherwise not be communicated to any flight automation system without direct input from the Captain or First Officer. ATC may also instruct pilots to hold at specific points in their airspace, turn left or right for weather or traffic, and so on. ATC also gives runway assignments, which must be inputted into the automation system (the Flight Management Computer or FMC) during the flight.

When pilots are flying, they must monitor all systems of the aircraft, regardless of the flight conditions (takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approach, landing, taxi, etc.). On long flights, replacement crews are often scheduled on flights. These replacement crews take over for either a period of time in the flight or for the remainder of a flight, after the initial pilots decide that it's time to rest (which can also be impacted by duty times set by the aviation administrations for all pilots). The initial crew will go to a crew resting area or regular airline seats to rest.
