  1. An abnormal opening between two normally non-unioned organs or other structures. It is possible to have a fistula between the v****a and the r****m, the urethra and the v****a, the bladder and the uterus, or any other areas of the body in close proximity. It is kind of like a window or hole.

  2. A fistula can happen to male and females and can happen anywhere in the body.  I had one in my intestine after a car accident and it was very painful, spent a month in the hospital recovering from it.  It is a disconnection or possibly a small hole in an organ or between two organs and can also happen in veins.

  3. A fistula is an abnormal connection between an organ, vessel, or intestine and another structure. Fistulas are usually the result of injury or surgery. It can also result from infection or inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, is an example of a disease that leads to fistulas between one loop of intestine and another. Injury can lead to fistulas between arteries and veins.

I am a female crohn's pt. who has had several fistulas during my life time. They are not pleasant to have and a pain in the butt to treat.
