  1. I cannot tell exactly where is safe, but you should avoid passing around SMN station or Mercato Centrale area at night.  Choose big streets to walk where there are many people. You should always watch out for your bag, especially in the restaurants or on the public bus.

If you'll be careful for these things, I bet you can have a good time in Florence.

To live in the center of Florence, maybe it's kinda noisy even at night.  I recommend to live a little off from the center... Pizza Beccaria/Oberdan area would be nice.  Nice residence area and there are some super markets around, and not too far from the center (around 15 to 20 mins by walk).

or... a friend of mine (italian 33yrs old guy) is looking for someone to rent a single room.  Close to the succor stadium where is nice & quiet.  But you have to take a bus to get to the center for 10-15mins.  If you are interested in this, pls let me know.  The apt has 4 single rooms (2 bathroom), so it will be a share house.

hope this will be a help...

  2. Although beautiful, Florence is not the safest place in the world to live.  Pickpockets abound, especially around the Cathedral.  If you go, try to blend in and not look like a tourist.  The police are everywhere, and yet they turn a blind-eye to pickpockets.  These guys are really fast.  You can just turn around and these guys will have emptied your purse.  And they're not gypsies!  They are local boys.  Watch out for the guys dressed in black shirts and pants.  I would suggest that you live just a short distance away, in the Tuscan hills.

  3. Hi Wish,,, i just returned from there a month ago.. i have a good friend that is living near the Duermo..... the cathdral.... walk past it,, and straight ahead... lots of young ladies there going to school also.... safety in numbers..... ok....

You should be ok..... and I wish you the best..... also... just past the cathedral.... on the right about 50 yards,, is a small resturant... has great food for a normal price....

When i get there the treat is on me.......

    good luck

  4. Im from florence and I think is very very safe.. The centre is the most safe area it's plenty of cameras and police..

  5. Hello

To my knowledge, Florence ( along with the rest of Italy ) is quite safe. There are a few bad pockets, but for the most part, crime is not really an issue in Italy.

Of course, your safety also depends on you. Things like not traveling alone in dark places, don't flash loads of money around, etc... will decrease your chances of being victimized.

In Florence and other big cities that have lots of monuments, there is a lot of police presence to begin with. Both Carabinieri and Polizia patrol the streets on a regular basis. If you want the safest areas, make sure you get an apartment in near the Duomo or the Uffizi Gallery.  Note; The Carabinieri are cops, but unlike N.A. cops, they are very strict and should not be joked around with.

The biggest problem that you could encounter in Italy is pickpockets like someone else mentioned. Apart from that, I am sure you will be pretty safe.
