Question:

Do you know what barbecue is?

or do you just call all food that is cooked on the grill barbecue? Also, if you do know what it is, it is vinegar based or tomato based where you live, and where do you live?

ps-for people who don't know, barbecue is chopped up pork with either a vinegar or tomato base.

  1. BBQ is anything grilled on a grill. Not just pork. Also BBQ isn't vinegar or tomato based.  BBQ sauce is whats tomato or vinegar based.


  2. these days,  people call barbecue for any kind of meat (even fish or prawn or mutton...etc) which is chopped into pieces, mixed with vinegar or other sauces , then baked on grill...........

  4. Barbecue is anything that is cooked on a grill. Smoked barbecue is just a different way to cook the meat that is done using just the smoke from the charcoal and not the direct heat. In middle Tennessee we use more of tomato based sauce (i use ketchup on my bbq sandwich).

Here in Texas, barbecue is meat cooked in or served with barbecue sauce (sweet, tangy and sometimes hot tomato based sauce); the meat itself may be grilled or smoked.  Most commonly, you'd find beef brisket (sliced or pulled), chicken, pulled pork, or sausages; either as a standalone entree or as a sandwich.

    I have a friend in Pennsylvania who described what "barbecue" is in his area -- it's what we'd call "sloppy joes" here (ground beef in a barbecue-style sauce on a bun).

    "To barbecue", however (used as a verb) generally is interchangeable with "to grill" -- meaning, cooking steaks, hamburgers, barbecued meats, veggie shishkebabs, etc. on a grill.

  7. As a southern man from Memphis (best 'que in the world) I would love to agree with you, however, barbecue is by definition the term used for the cooking method.  Webster defines barbecue as " to roast or broil on a rack or revolving spit over or before a source of heat (as hot coals)".  

    Texans would also argue with your definition, since barbecued beef is popular there.

    I guess what I am saying to you is, yes, I know what barbecue is, I love barbecued pork with vinegar sauce, but it is called barbecued pork.  The cooking method is barbecue.  

    You should expand your horizons a little, experience the world some before attempting to spread knowledge.

  8. never gave it any thought. of course, i live in San Francisco, so it's rarely mentioned or seen, as it's so condensed, people don't have the time or space to sit on their stoops and fire it up all day.

  10. here in the philippines barbecue is pork cut into cubes then marinated in soy sauce, lemon, sugar and other spices ,then grilled then eaten with vinegar with spices as sauce. we also have chicken barbecue.

  12. Currently I'm in Alabama, it's tomato based sauce here with some kick... and if its chopped or pulled on a bun it better be piled up with slaw and pickles or it isn't done proper!!  It's usually pork.

    In Texas (lived there for awhile), it's tomato based and thick, and beef or brisket seemed common. You could get other meats as well.

    While visiting the carolina's it was vinegar based and pork or chicken were what I found to be most popular. It was equally as good. :)

    Ribs are usually done wet (with sauce) or dry (with the season rub on it and nothing else).

    GRILLING on the other hand (just cookig food on a grill) is NOT BBQ... unless your from the north LOL!!  BBQ is usually cooked low and slow for long periods of time in a smoker, not on a grill. If you cook on a grill it's called grilling.

  13. barbecue is different things to people in different areas... to some folks anything cooked on a grill is bbq, and to others, it's only slow cooked meat on a grill, or only cooked with indirect heat regardless of sauce or rub. to myself it's pork or beef cooked on a grill and a sweet sauce that's tomato based, and by the sauce you can tell I'm from Kansas City, if you know more than your own area of bbq.

    Its anything that you can grill on wire mash with hot charcoal underneath.

    In Singapore we have BBQ (verb) seafood such as squid, stingray (fish), prawns and crab marinated with sauces such as chillie. We sort of wrap those in foils and grill so that when you open those, the seafood is cooked with the sauces and essence locked in.

    We also BBQ hotdogs, satays (chicken marinated cubes on sticks) and chicken wings on open fire. At the hot charcoal we throw in sweet potatos and sweet corns (foil wrapped). We add butter and honey to the hotdogs and chicken wings so that they taste sweet and crispy.

    Then we round up the meal with BBQ mashmellows and also smores (mashmellows and chocolates) for those who knows how to make it.

  16. barbeque in nc is vinigar based. i call that stuff barbeque and nothing else. if i am grilling, i will say im having a barbeque but thats about it
