Years ago I read this young adult science fiction novel and have not ever forgotten elements of the story...but, of course, I cannot remember the book's title.
It was about a group of kids that wake up in (or are brought to) a room without windows or doors. They discover that if they react in certain ways to stimuli in the environment (like lights or sounds) that they will be rewarded with a food-like jelly substance that is dispensed through a tube into the space.
They fight and try and work together and fight some more...the book is about psychology and behavior...at the end the children are released and the narrator, who has resisted the conditional training the most, notes that as soon as the other kids see a traffic light change they start acting like they did in the weird room in response to the lights to get food...
It's driving me crazy...thanks in advance!
