  1. SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Menengah) is a Malaysian middle school examination that is also equivalent to O-Level (Ordinary Level) in the British education system. SPM is typically taken after 5 years of secondary school education, and students generally sit for 10 papers altogether, including 5 compulsory subjects of Malay Language, English, Mathematics, History and Moral Studies (for non-Muslim) or Islamic Studies (for Muslim).

STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) is taken approximately 2 years after SPM, and it is equivalent to A-Level (Advanced Level) and generally a student sits for 4-5 papers from an open set of choices, but depending on the course that you're planning to take, there may be prerequisite subjects that you should sit the examination for.

Check out this website http://www.malaysia-students.com/ or alternatively wikipedia does give a simple explanation to both qualifications.

By the way, this question should probably go to Education section than Dining Out...
