I have a huge problem with reading. When I read books and long texts, I forget what I read and it just frustrates me. I'm great at vocabulary and answering essay questions unless it has to do with a book. I can read, but when I read it never sticks in my mind. I read long texts and books and at the end I have no clue what I just read. some people say I could possibly have dyslexia, but I don't do anything backwords when I read and write. Some people say I need to choose the right book, but this problem follows me no matter what I read. Do you know what kind of reading disabilty could be?

  1. It is similar to dyslexia, you have a comprehension problem.

Dyslexia is caused by a brain disconnection, I bet you have the same thing, but wired in the comprehension areas.

Ask this question at www.beingdyslexic.co.uk or www.interdys.org

Please check out www.geocities.com/carjug I predict you will hate the site! carjug@yahoo.com

Another thought, do you keep any notes when you read? It worked for kid in 5th grade class?

  2. It could very well be dyslexia. FYI, only 10% of all dyslexic people reverse letters and numbers. That is just one of the many misunderstood things about dyslexia. It is much more complex than most people know. There are also different levels of severity (mildly to severely dyslexic). Dyslexia is not a disease, not a disorder, people do not have dyslexia, they ARE dyslexic. There is no "cure" and it does not go away. People who are dyslexic ( 20% of all people or 1 in 5) must learn different stragities so they can learn to their potential. They are perfectly "normal" and they are 99.9% of the time of average to above average in intelligence. Many dyslexics are gifted to superior in intelligence. However, their inability to read and comprehend hold them back from learning to their full potential. Unless you have been tested for such a learning difference, you will not know for sure. Not all dyslexics are poor readers.

Most dyslexics are "auditory" learners. They learn best when hearing the lesson or words. Reading silently will make comprehension very difficult as they need to hear the words. When at home try reading everything aloud so you can hear the words. Another thing you can do is get unabridged books on tape. Follow along with the hard copy as the book is being read to you. These books are available at your local library. You can also download books on tape onto your computer or Ipod from "audible.com". This will cost you a few dollars but it will also help you a great deal.

Talk to your parents about your concerns. If that is not possible talk to a teacher. I wish you luck. I can tell by your question that you are very bright. Do not give up and do not worry. Your are OK.

  3. I don't think you have a reading disability. You could possibly have ADD. It could also be the book because everybody has that problem, at least with text books. Is it that you have trouble paying attention to what you are reading?

My suggestion is that you try and find something that you enjoy reading about.

  4. Let's call it a learning ability.  The learning ability you have is "picture thinking".

    There are 2 thinking styles:

    Word thinking - verbal thinking

    Picture thinking - non-verbal thinking (aka-visual-spatial learner)

So why does this learning ability cause learning problems?

Letters, symbols, and abstract words (the, and, but, ... 219 of them!) have no pictures for the picture thinking mind.  This causes the picture thinking mind confusion.  This is why you can't remember what you read.

I would say you are dyslexic.  The "backwards thing" is only one characteristic of dyslexia and all dyslexics do not do the "backwards" thing.

In fact, there are 41 characteristics of dyslexia and no 2 dyslexics will have the same ones.

There is a program that would help you use your "picture thinking" to give you success in remembering what you read.  It is very positive and it is fun.

Read The Gift of Dyslexia by Ron Davis or visit http://www.dsylexia.com to learn more about this program.  There may be a provider of the program near you.  If not, many travel to provide programs, or you can travel to them!

  5. You have a memory problem attached somehow to reading. The way to help this is to read small sections at a time ( paragraphs or chapters) and ask yourself questions at the end of each section ( who, what ,why). You could even put a sticky note at the end of each section answering these questions. This will help tremendously. If you want to improve your long term memory I am sure you can find books/games/websites that can help with that. Good Luck !

  6. I know exactly what you mean i do the same thing and I have ADD so you probably have it too and no it s not dyslexia my cousin has that and it is when you get letters and numbers mixed up in your head!

  7. I do the same thing...i have slight ADD. if you have problems concentrating on anything else then that is probably it. i mean i'm not ALL the way ADD, but i have a slight problem paying attention and keeping focus...I think everyone does...

  8. its ok. i have eye problems. my eyes blank out. >< OMG. that happens to me during s.s. read then take the test. no i dont. i have it myself i guess. >< its ok. everybody has a different problem. im practicly vison 14/20. ><
