  1. Edison tried thousands of material including carbon filament for electric bulb


  2. The combination he found that worked best (not very well compared to today's lightbulbs) was a tungsten filament inside a vacuum.  This allowed the W to get very hot (white hot) without oxidizing away too quickly.
