Yes.  I have heard that quote a few times.  I think the physically & literally banged up part is the same thing.  But it's basically just about someone who has gone through a lot of rough times in her life, but she walks outside with a smile because she doesn't want anyone to know she is hurting so badly.  I could use another quote to describe that, 'Pretend that you're happy so you can fool everyone else, & then eventually maybe you can fool yourself into thinking you are happy as well.'

It's kind of like "behind every smile, is a broken heart."

Meaning, no matter what life goes on.  It hurts inside, but on the outside it is hidden by the smile we choose to put on to face the rest of the world.

She does not want anyone to know she is hurting, so she goes out with a smile to hide how much she has been hurt.  It also seems like she does not let the hurt affect who she is as a person.

It means this women has been through it all, she has been physically abused, mentally abused, and has went through a lot both ways...but she still gets up and puts a smile on her face because she is so strong of a women.
