  1. Other responses are also correct, but the solar cycle must be considered as well.  This year they lights won't be as spectacular as in two or three years when we are closer to solar maximum.  Once solar maximum is over, the lights will be less impressive than they are now, in the middle of a solar cycle.

As far as day to day, month to month, definitely check the web for those sites with sighting announcements.

  2. I grew up in Michigan and there were several areas where the "Lights" were a vivid display. have a look here:

  3. At night, usually north of 50 degrees Latitude (but not always), after there has been a solar flare.

  4. At night, hear the arctic circle.

  5. Actually there is a website that is dedicated to the Aurora and it tells you where it is most visible on a daily basis.

    Its located here.

  6. High latitudes, is correct.  Occasionally -- rarely -- one will be seen as far south as 30 or 35 degrees N or S latitude (I know I've seen them at 33 degrees N).

But the sun must have an active flare, or coronal 'hole' facing toward the earth for particles to cause an aurora.

These guys will alert you by phone (automated recording) when one of these events happen:

    Also.... check out:
