I'm doing a project with my preschoolers. We are learning about doctors and nurses. It would be great if we can go on a field trip to visit a children ward at the hospital.

  1. Well, that would be a much easier question to answer if you said where you lived.  I mean, I know the hospital down the street from my apartment here in Texas lets children visit, but if you're in Wisconsin, you might not want to make the drive.

Honestly, I would call the main line to local hospitals and pitch the idea of having a preschool class come for a visit.  Be prepared, though.  As I'm sure you've noticed, 30 3-year-olds walking around a hospital could be a health risk, for them and for the patients.  You may do better asking around to see if a doctor and/or a nurse could come to the school and talk to them.  My guess is that at least one of the kids in the preschool has a mom or dad who is a doctor or nurse, or otherwise works in the medical profession.  That would let them learn about doctors and nurses first-hand, but in a more kid-friendly environment.

  2. If you're in California --- Children's Hospital  Central California - They are use to giving tours to children. It helps children to know what to expect before surgery or treatments. Children come to this hospital from all over.

Children's Hospital Central California is one of the 10 largest freestanding pediatric hospital in the nation, and the only one west of the Rockies with Magnet Nursing Certification.

I'm sure the tour would be only to not contagious areas, or to areas where you can not contaminate sick children.

  3. You don't say what area you are from. If there is a local childrens hospital nearby...I would call and ask them.

  4. You are better off trying your luck with smaller hospital like Adam Road hospital or non-profit hospital like Ren Ci Hospital.  The big boys will not allow it.

Is it necessary to bring them to a hospital especially children ward?  If my child is in your school, I would turn down this field trip because I don't want my child catching anything from the hospital.  Why not a local not so busy Dermatologist or Ophthalmologist where the risk of catching something is slimmer?

  5. I don't think a hospital would allow this the only children under 12 that are allowed is on the maternity ward and that is only if they are siblings, if you want to teach about nursing then why not visit a nursing home, it would help the residents and a much slower pace then a hospital, sorry but most people in a hospital are sick or recuperating and the last thing they want is little kids around. plus the risk of outside infections from little kids is great and that is the reason most hospitals ban children from visiting.
