  1. She's mentioned in the Bible as a Queen who went to visit King Solomon. It was a diplomatic visit to make peace and establish trade between their two countries.

She brought him many gifts, of things that were unique to her land - sort of free samples, I suppose, as they included a lot of rare plants, medicinal herbs, culinary spices and incense.

She enjoyed a long visit, talking about plants and animals; they were both highly intelligent and educated people.

A sort of environmental summit as well as a trade mission!

Of course the legend has grown up that they became lovers; also - because the Bible says that Solomon "talked of beasts and birds" someone mis-read that to say he "talked to beasts and birds", and was a bit of a magician. Well, we can't be sure.

Some people identify her with Queen Hatshepsut of Egypt, others say she was Queen Balkis whose realm was further to the south.

She's also said to be the black lady in the Song of Solomon.

Quite a remarkable woman, at any rate!

  2. Sheba was The Bible name for an area of what is known today as either southern Saudi Arabia and Yemen, or Ethiopia, or both. Also known as Saba, its people were known as Sabeans. The visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon is one of the most famous stories of Bible History. Although her actual name is not recorded in the Bible account, there is a Muslim tradition that she was called Balkis. An Ethiopian account also claims that she had at least one child with Solomon, although again the Bible makes no such mention.

When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of The Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices, and very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king which he could not explain to her.

After Solomon successfully answers her riddles, the queen showers him with gifts. So she turned and went back to her own land, with her servants. According to Ethiopian tradition the queen returned to Sheba and bore a son by Solomon, Menelik I, who was the beginning of the Ethiopian royal dynasty. Later Ethiopian tradition firmly asserts that King Solomon did seduce and impregnate his guest, and provides a detailed story of how he went about it - a matter of considerable importance to Ethiopians, as their Emperors traced their lineage to that union.
